HOME EMPLOYMENT

DEFINITION OF HOME OCCUPATION

Definition of Home Occupation: Any occupation, business or commercial activity carried on at the premises by a member of the immediate family residing on the premises and no more than one (1) non-related employee, which use is otherwise in compliance with the zoning ordinance, provided, the following uses are forbidden:

  1. Dog grooming;
  2. Provision of care, instruction or training of more than two (2) children, at one (1) time, not including the occupant of the home, whether or not for profit;
  3. Any wholesale, jobbing or retail business unless it is conducted entirely by mail and/or telephone and does not involve the receipt, sale, shipment, delivery or storage of merchandise on or from the premises;
  4. (4) Any manufacturing business;
  5. (5) Any repair shop operating on or from the premises;
  6. (6) A clinic or hospital;
  7. (7) A barber shop or beauty parlor;
  8. (8) A stable, animal hospital, dog kennel or dovecote;
  9. (9) A restaurant;
  10. (10) Any activity that produces noxious matter or employs or produces flammable matter; and
  11. (11) Any occupation which involves the use of any mechanical equipment other than what is usual for purely domestic or hobby purposes, or what is usual for a small business, professional or medical office.

HOME OCCUPATION APPLICATION PROCESS

  1. Obtain the application form at the Olivette Public Works Department and read thoroughly - or download it below!
  2. Submit the completed application and letter describing the home application point by point as called for in the ordinance.
  3. The Building Commissioner will determine whether the application is permissible and notify applicant in writing. The applicant at this time will also be sent the proper business license.
  4. The applicant will call and schedule an inspection of the areas used by the proposed home occupation and life safety issues in common areas.
  5. 5. The occupancy permit will be issued upon compliance of the inspection letter.

NOTE: A copy of the actual ordinance is contained along with the packet for the applicant.

The fee for an inspection of a home occupation application is $15.00 and $10.00 for any reinspection.
