Tips for Kids

• A stranger is anyone that you do not know very well.

• You can tell a bad person by their actions.

• Move away from a vehicle that pulls up next to you if you do not know the driver.  Always run in the opposite direction that the vehicle is traveling.

• If someone grabs you, scream and kick.  Yell as loud as you can and continue to scream until help comes.

• Never take gifts or food from anyone you don’t know before asking your parents first.  Do not go with someone who offers you money or says they need your help looking for something.

• Never play near isolated places.

• Always tell your parents a “bad secret.”  If a stranger tells you to keep a secret, this is a type of “bad secret.”

• Never stop believing that your parents will come looking for you.  Your parents will always be worried about you and will never stop loving you.

• Stay away from adults who ask you for directions.  Adults should only ask other adults for directions.

• Never go with anyone who tells you that your parents are in trouble.

• It is ok for you to say “NO” to adults, especially if it is someone you do not know.  Always tell your parents immediately about the question you said “NO” to.

• Never answer the door if you are home alone.

• When home by yourself and you answer the phone, never let anyone know you are by yourself.  Always ask to take a message and that mom/dad are busy right now.

• Never invite anyone into your home without your parents’ permission.

• If a stranger pulls you into a vehicle, press the gas pedal the first time you are being a stopped vehicle, grab the steering wheel, throw the keys into the trash, and/or honk the horn.  If you are in the trunk of the car, pull out the brake light wires and if there is an emergency release handle, pull it.

• If you are wearing an ID bracelet or something that can easily be taken off of your body, throw it out along your path.  Make sure that it is something that your parents can easily identify as being yours.

• If a stranger takes you to a house and you get locked in a room where you cannot get out of the window, flip the lights on and off.

• Stop any unwanted touching, tickling, or teasing.  Remember what your parents taught you about places that you should not be touched.  If anyone touches you in these places, tell someone you trust and your parents.

• Keep a lot of space around your body.  Be aware of your surroundings.  Move with confidence.  Use self-defense such as kicking and screaming if someone gets too close to you.

• When by yourself or when an emergency happens, get help from people that you trust.  If you have a telephone nearby, call 911.

• Always tell your parents where you are when playing with friends.  If you decide to go somewhere else, let your parents know before you change places.

• If you do not like the way a person has talked to you, tell your parents immediately.
